Tanzania has continued to lead the world by having as many lions as 14,912 and 24,000 giraffes in its reserves. This was said by the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mohamed Omary Mchengerwa while presenting the Ministry’s Estimated Revenue and Expenditure for the 2023/2024 Financial Year, in parliament in Dodoma.

He said the ministry has continued to increase efforts to strengthen the protection and conservation of natural resources by controlling poaching, illegal trade in loot, illegal harvesting of forest products and bees and invasion of protected areas. This increase confirms the decrease in wildlife poaching in the country.

The Ministry has continued these efforts along with other things have enabled the increase in the number of elephants from 43,330 in 2014 to 60,000 and made Tanzania the third (3rd) country in Africa to have the most elephants.

On the other hand, the number of black rhinos has continued to increase from 163 in 2019 to 238 in 2022, thus exceeding the goal of the National Strategy for the Conservation of 205 Rhinos by December 2023.

Along with that, information on the security situation shows that in the period of July 2022 to 2023, no wildlife deaths due to poaching were reported.
